One local girl used the skills she learned in Girl Scouting to help neighbors in need. The night Hurricane Irene swept through central Maryland, Girl Scout Junior Addison from troop 1812 woke up to a loud crash and boom down the street. In the morning light she discovered the cause—two trees had fallen on her neighbor’s home. The family was safe, but the house was destroyed and condemned by Fire and Rescue. Addison wanted to help, but did not quite know how.
Addison wrote a letter introducing herself as a neighbor and Girl Scout and informing the community of their neighbor’s misfortune from the storm. If they were willing to make a donation, she asked them to hang the flier on their door and she would stop by to collect their contributions. In all, Addison collected $320, which she presented to her neighbor in a card. “The look on Addison’s face, as well as his, was priceless,” said Melanie, Addison’s mother and troop leader. “He was touched and appreciative, and Addison learned that you can make a difference through your own personal time and service.”
