Program Aide Training

Program Aides are role models for younger Girl Scouts. They have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of what leadership development means and simultaneously get excited about guiding younger girls to be leaders in their own lives and in the world.   Here are the steps to earn the Cadette Program Aide Award:   Complete the Program Aide Training course offered by council. Earn one LiA (Leader in Action) Award. (This is a pre-requisite). Work directly with younger Girl Scouts by assisting a troop with a Journey or badge activity, helping with a service unit or council event, or assisting at a Girl Scout summer camp.     Girls are able to begin working on the activity sessions in seventh grade. Girls will receive a log to track their activity sessions at their PA training. Completed logs should be turned in to the program specialist who taught their PA training. The specialist will award Cadettes who have completed all requirements with the pin. Note: Summer camp aides have additional requirements.

Chemistry in the Kitchen (STEM)

In this exciting program, girls will learn how cooking and baking are based on some of the most basic ideas of science. Girls will determine the differences in chemical and physical reactions as they change sugar to delicious caramel candy or even make a soda explosion! Older girls will experiment with chromatography and find out about the make-up of some of their favorite candy, while younger girls will learn about density as they create their own liquid totem. Each girl will leave this event with a book full of fun chemistry experiments to do both in the kitchen and all around the house with friends or family members and a fun patch.

Harvest for the Hungry Spring Forward Drive

In addition to to GSCM’s year round participation in Harvest for the Hungry, during the first week of March we partner with AARP, Safeway, the US Postal Service, and the Maryland Food Bank for the Spring Forward Food Drive. This week will be a concentrated effort to raise awareness in our local areas and to remind everyone that “hunger knows no holiday.” Keep an eye on GSCM’s Facebook and blog for special ways to participate during this week, or create something with your troop. You can host a food drive, spread the word, and work on the Harvest for the Hungry patch. Find the patch packet here: http://gscm.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/04-412_HarvestfortheHungry_PatchPacket-UPDATED.pdf To receive your free Harvest for the Hungry patches and/or year rockers, return your patch report form to council.
