Through a wide variety of innovative programs and unique opportunities Girl Scouts of Central Maryland helps every girl reach her full potential and realize her self-worth. GSCM’s Community programs provide a special focus on self-esteem, conflict resolution, and healthy lifestyles. The goal of these programs is to develop the natural leader in each girl through activities, field trips and workshops that empower them to be the captains of their own destinies. Moreover, the program provides a setting in which girls can foster good decision-making skills while discovering their abilities and interests.

It’s not just what girls do, but how you engage them that creates a high-quality experience. Nowhere is this more important than in our in-school and after-school activities where the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is available to girls 5-17 years of age through the series pathway delivery system.
Girl Scouts’ In-School/After-school programs are designed to enhance girls’ academic skills and offer the benefits of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The six-week programs encourage cooperation and teamwork among girls as they explore concepts intended to build self-esteem, confidence and leadership ability. For 20 years our Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program has allowed mothers and daughters to be involved in each other’s lives through bi-weekly troop meetings. Since 2006, the troop has had an annual overnight meeting at the Maryland women’s correctional facility with their mothers. Girls and moms work on character building activities and Girl Scout badges. The importance of strengthening the bond between mother and daughter continues to be a proven method of teaching girls how to make better choices.
“Not only has the Girl Scout program affected my daughter in so many positive ways, but it has had a huge impact on my life as well. Being a mother behind bars can lead many into feelings of helplessness and severe depression. Girl Scouts has allowed me the opportunity to spend quality time with my daughter teaching, sharing, and being more of a positive role model.”
“As a mother who has been an inmate for over eight years, the opportunity to spend nearly 14 hours with my daughter was nothing short of a miracle. My daughter said her favorite part of the sleepover is getting to be with me where I am. The two of us stayed up all night talking about everything and anything.”
GSCM’s Beyond Bars program has been recognized locally and nationally by the National Institute for Justice, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and the Maryland Criminal Justice Association.
