caitlin dunbar nature center

The Caitlin Dunbar Nature Center is a unique haven for nature lovers, conveniently situated in the heart of central Maryland with locations at Girl Scouts of Central Maryland’s Camp Ilchester and Camp Conowingo. The mission of the Caitlin Dunbar Nature Center is to instill an awareness and appreciation of nature and the out of doors through education, and to promote environmental stewardship with a commitment to using resources wisely, preserving wildlife habitat, and making the world a better place.

The Caitlin Dunbar Nature Center was founded in memory of Caitlin Dunbar (March 9, 1989 – December 28, 2004) a special Girl Scout of Central Maryland who loved nature and the outdoors. In honor of Caitlin’s memory, Girl Scouts of Central Maryland and numerous friends opened the Caitlin Dunbar Nature Center at Camp Conowingo on June 18, 2006 and the Caitlin Dunbar Nature Center at Camp Ilchester on March 9, 2008. Located on 19 acres of natural woods, the Caitlin Dunbar Nature Center in Ellicott City is home to wildlife both inside the Clementine Peterson Activity Center and outdoors in the wild.

The Caitlin Dunbar Nature Center offers a variety of nature programs for school and Girl Scout groups, families and friends of nature of all ages!

Nature Work Days

Volunteers of all ages are invited to pitch in to help with wildlife and enhance the Caitlin Dunbar Center and the grounds of Camp Ilchester. The tasks vary from month to month and will change with the seasons. Come dressed for the outdoors, bring your work gloves, and help clear the nature paths, rake leaves, get soils ready for gardening and a variety of other tasks. This is a great way to earn service learning hours!
